One of the most exciting ways of establishing and maintaining a vibrant relationship with God is to be in constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Interestingly, one of the most common questions people ask me is, “How do I hear the Holy Spirit?” Usually people want a magic formula – and while there isn’t a 1-2-3 magic formula, there are a few disciplines that you can implement to place yourself in the position of hearing the Holy Spirit more clearly. Remember, He is always ready to speak to you. He is always ready to guide you. What is all too often missing are the hearing ears. We need to ‘open’ our spiritual ears to hear Him. Let’s look at three steps that you can easily take to improve your ability to hear the Holy Spirit.

#1 Hear the Holy Spirit when you Focus on the Word

A hugely effective way to improve your ability to hear the Holy Spirit is by focusing on God’s Word with both your heart and mind. In John 15:7, Jesus said, “But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!”

How can you tell when you have been focusing enough on God’s Word? The Holy Spirit talks to you through it! He directs your thoughts as you go about your day. He brings His Word to your mind when challenges arise, and He helps you know what to do. You focus on the Word by spending time in it. It doesn’t work well when you just read God’s Word casually every now and then. But it always works well if you are diligent to read your Bible and reflect on it every day and then obey it. Treat it like the priceless treasure that it truly is.

#2 Hear the Holy Spirit when you Listen to God’s People

The Holy Spirit isn’t only speaking to you; He’s speaking to many of God’s people. He will especially be speaking to those who listen and obey Him. Sometimes faithful believers have received a message from the Lord for the Church, like when the Lord spoke through the Apostles. Other times, the Holy Spirit uses His people to share a special message specifically for you. At times God can use a trusted minister or a Spirit-led friend or family member to nudge you to see and hear the Holy Spirit’s direction.

But be careful. That doesn’t mean you should listen to every person, or even every Christian, who believes that God wants them to tell you something. Test the spirit. Make sure those people speak in line with God’s word and that they are established Spirit-led believers. God can and does wonderful things through His Church but proceed cautiously.

#3 Hear the Holy Spirit when you Listen in Prayer

Do you find yourself doing all the talking in your prayer time with the Lord? If you don’t get quiet enough to listen, you won’t be able to hear what the Holy Spirit is speaking to your heart. When you pray, spend some time praising God for His goodness and thanking Him for all He has done for you (Psalm 100:4). Thank Him before you ask Him for what you need (Philippians 4:13). After that, remain silent. Prayer is not a one-way conversation. Give the Holy Spirit a chance to speak to your heart and mind. He may bring a scripture or song to your mind. He may bring a person to mind that needs your prayers. Or He may give you direction for your day or even an answer for a prayer request.

Making a prayer journal is another great way to identify the Holy Spirit’s voice. Write down what you’ve asked the Lord for and the different ways He has answered those prayers. Write the thoughts He brings to your mind. As you put this into practice, you’ll understand more about how the Holy Spirit works in and through you. You’ll begin to hear (and read) His answers.

The Holy Spirit is always talking. I think of it more like a constant whisper. It’s up to you and me to hear the still small voice of the Spirit of God clearly. By putting these three keys into practice, you’ll improve your ability to hear the Holy Spirit, and you’ll have the joy of living a life led by His Spirit! You can do it.

You are loved and prayed for.  Remember, with God nothing is impossible!

“God uses many people to speak to us … seems like Dale and Paula Black are among those so chosen! If you haven’t read Dale’s book FLIGHT TO HEAVEN I urge you to. Happy I did!  Paula’s own book LIFE, CANCER AND GOD is my next book to read.” Ray G.
“Beautiful and important message. Thank you. Love your heart SO MUCH, Dale and Paula. Truth and kindness and charity and love and our Lord Jesus; and MORE SOULS for His Kingdom: that’s the perfect agenda. God continue to bless you. I’ll do what I can, too 😉 Can hardly bear to wait to know you for eternity. Love.” Cynthia, in Massachusetts
“Thank you Dale & Paula. I love you and your ministry. Your testimonies have blessed me and taught me. I thank God for you and offer encouragement and prayers. I am struggling with non-believing friends and telling them about Jesus. Please pray that the Holy Spirit would teach me what to say. Thank you for your prayers. May we all glorify the Lord with our efforts! Praise the Lord Jesus!” Don B.
“…Thank You for your ministry. I live in Cincinnati and found your book Flight to Heaven about a year ago. WOW what an impact on me. I don’t believe everyone who claims to have been to heaven, but I do believe you, Capt. Black. Showing us glimpses of heaven, a real place, is so comforting. I also discovered your YouTube videos. I am watching them almost every day now. Everything you and Paula teach is so on target with truth. Until recently I thought disease was part of growing older (I am 62), but now I understand completely that growing older may mean gray hair and eyesight that is not as it was in my twenties, but not disease!!  Anyway, I am so excited to learn more and more from you. THANK YOU.” Pam O.
