Are you ready to make a fresh start with God? Whether you are a brand new believer, an experienced ol’ timer, or one who doesn’t yet have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, there is great news. You can start right now, or start over, today.

Many people feel they can’t make a fresh start with God because past sins still haunt them. Sin is a sneaky and fiendish thing. Even if you know you are a Christian, Satan still wants to keep you bound with unconfessed sin. Satan is the “accuser.” He will try very hard to bring up your past sins—even if they’ve already been confessed and forgiven.

Let me try to help by asking a personal question. Do you feel like unconfessed sins are blocking God’s blessings? Sin stifles your intimacy with God. And if your aren’t communicating and receiving direction from Him, you can miss His path of blessing in your life.

What I am NOT saying is that unconfessed sin causes you to lose your salvation. But I am saying it’s holding you back from all that God has for you. If you’re feeling a distant from God… unconfessed sin is likely the culprit.

For many there are the “BIG sins,” which seem to stick around and haunt. Just when you think you’re doing pretty good, an old memory will flood back and remind you of the terrible thing you did in your past. Even though you may have confessed that sin before, and even though you asked God to forgive you—along with that memory comes condemnation. This is one of Satan’s favorite tactics to rob you of your spiritual freedom in Christ. You must resist this with force… reminding yourself and Satan that you are free and forgiven. Because when you feel unworthy, it’s almost impossible to have the faith you need to live for God with joy and power.

As believers we have assurance from God’s Word, “If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

But here comes the practical challenge. In order to make a fresh start with God each day it requires more than just ‘knowing’ the truth.  You are made up of three parts. You are a spirit. You have a soul. You live in a body. Your soul is made up of your mind, will and emotions. So not only do you need your spirit cleansed of the old sins of the past, but you also need your soul cleansed as well. Through my more than six decades of living on this planet I am convinced that the importance of renewing your mind cannot be overemphasized. For me, I need and love a fresh start with God each and every day. It’s a lot like doing house cleaning. A fresh start with God each morning will help you remain free of those past sins that can so easily set you back that the devil uses to try and create fear or condemnation in your life.

Once you go through the process of taking inventory with yourself and God, and repenting of any sin (no matter how small), it’s important that you also clear your conscience of those sins. When it comes to sin—any sin, no matter the size—if you’ve confessed it and asked for forgiveness, the blood of Jesus has you covered. You are guiltless. From then on, it’s really about RETRAINING your mind (your soul) to respond properly when Satan shows up to accuse you. I can hear you asking, “But how?”

You start by renewing your mind to think as God does about the situation. Romans 12:2a tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Forgetting what is Behind – God has already purged His memory of all the sins you have confessed to Him. Your past sins, ALL OF THEM, have been washed by the blood of the Lamb. They are as far away as the east is from the west.

God has given you everything you need to cleanse your spirit. He has given you His Name. He has given you His Word. He has given His blood. God has also given you the ability to cleanse your mind (soul) of past sins as well. As a new creation in Christ Jesus, you have been given the very mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).

You may be saying, “Great. This is awesome news. I’m glad to be reminded of this, but! How do I get rid of these old memories? These memories keep holding me back from making a fresh start. What can I do?”

You get rid of the memories by learning about and then obeying God’s Word. When a sin memory pops into your mind, right at that moment …you have a choice to make. You must not delay. You must resist falling into condemnation. If you agree with the memory, thinking, “Yes, I did that, and I feel so bad about that sin,” and if you stop thinking right there… then condemnation will set in. Those condemning thoughts will rob you of blessing and spiritual strength every time.

On the other hand, if you start thanking God that you are forgiven, that you confess that the blood of Jesus covers that sin and it no longer has any power over you, then you are free! This way you can have a fresh start with God any day – every day! So thank Him. Continually praise God for what He has done for you. This is how you can receive the blessings and revelations that God has for you now and forever.

Once you have consistently renewed your mind regarding the memory of old sins, you then open yourself up to the full force of God’s supernatural outpouring.

Clogged Pipes. There is another type of sin, which is actually a bigger problem. I’m talking about the little unconfessed sins that seem too insignificant for us to pay much attention to. But these undealt with sins rob us daily of spiritual power, making it difficult to hear God’s leading, and cause us to drift in our spiritual lives. There is a solution to this. Read on.

What you think of as an “insignificant sin” has very significant consequences. Sin like impatience, unforgiveness, gossip, criticism, a ‘white lie’, etc. are sins you are confronted with almost daily. If you don’t take the time daily to allow the Holy Spirit to remind you of these sins and repent of them when you fail, then what happens is, you go through your days with your spiritual pipes clogged. This blocks your ability to discern the Holy Spirit’s leading. These “little” sins keep you from hearing that still, small voice of the Holy Spirit effectively. So, here’s what you can do.

Take time every day to allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Pick a time and place that will remind you to unclog your pipes. For example, pick the first 3 miles of driving in your car. Or pick the first few minutes of your workout or over your first cup of coffee. Pick a regular time to ask God to reveal anything that may be hindering your spiritual life. As He reminds you of something, right away, repent and receive His forgiveness. Remember, repentance means you want to go in a new direction. Ask God to help you not repeat the offense again. But if you fail again, stop and repent again. Do this as often as is needed to keep the connection clear. Know this: when you ask God to forgive you isn’t when He finds out about it. That’s when you get rid of it.

As a believer, you are redeemed. You are bought with a price. God loves you and has made a way for you to stay intimately connected with Him. Why not make a fresh start with God today? Then make a fresh start with Him again tomorrow. What do you say?

You can do it. With God nothing is impossible.
