Money… what a hot topic. In this world each of us need money and therefore desire it, but what place does money hold in our lives? You can have plenty of it as far as God is concerned. God is not against His children having money. However, God is against money having you.

Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”  Matthew 6:24

God is against money being your utmost priority. He is against you putting your trust in it instead of in Him. He is against you gaining any money using ungodly methods. But He is for you having an abundance yet always keeping Him first in your life.

Why is the Lord against money having you? Several reasons. People become dependent upon having money. Earthly pride often accompanies having riches. Staying humble and surrendered to God is more difficult for those who have an abundance of money, so riches add an obstacle that must be overcome daily to keep God and His ways the priority. It can be done…but few maintain a surrendered heart over time.

Also He knows that money makes a lousy god. Its power is limited. Money will only buy so much. It will only go so far. And you lose it all anyway when you leave this earth.

“Do not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break through and steal. But gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 AMP

Let’s be honest with ourselves. If you need healing from an incurable disease, money won’t help you at all. If your family is falling apart, money won’t mend it. But if you’ll seek God first, His prosperity and blessings will reach into every area of your life.

When God blesses you with monetary gain because you have used your talents faithfully and been responsible at hard work, it’s a wonderful thing. He instructs us on how we should use those monies to build up His kingdom through tithes and offerings as well as to meet our personal needs and responsibilities.

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:31-33 NKJV

Don’t be confused. Being ‘pruned’ by God and remaining in poverty is not the same thing. God’s Word tells us that poverty is a curse. It is a blessing to have an abundance in the financial realm. Many of God’s chosen men throughout history were abundantly blessed in the riches of this world and they remained faithful to keep God on the throne.

At the same time we must consider the lives of the apostles, as well as Jesus. Their needs were met but they did not live luxurious lives. They were storing up treasures in heaven throughout their time on earth. Their focus was clear and they did not encumbered themselves with the things of this world. We must use wisdom in balancing our lives on this earth while maintaining an eternal perspective. God gives us valuable instruction for both.

His plan is for you to have all of your needs met according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. You can be a part of His plan by keeping your priorities straight. Seek Him first and His righteousness. God doesn’t drop money from heaven. He honors and blesses us as we are faithful with the seeds and talents He has already given us.

Make pleasing God your #1 priority. Set your eyes on Him above all else… walk in obedience to His Word… and “all these things” will be given you besides. God’s Word is true. He is faithful.
