We can learn quite a lot about God and His ways in the book of Genesis.  When we study the law of creation, we learn that everything brings forth after its own kind. When you plant corn, you reap corn. When you plant wheat, you reap wheat. When you plant the Word of God in your heart, water and cultivate that Word, it brings forth the fulfillment of that Word in your life.

Jesus taught that “the heart of a person” is like soil is to plants. When God’s Word is planted in good ground, great things can take place. You may wonder what makes good ground. Good ground is when you believe in your heart… and accept and receive God’s Word by faith. When you believe God and His Word, then the crop produced will indeed be God’s will in your life. How can I say this? Because God’s Word is God’s will, and that’s what His Word teaches.

In Mark, the fourth chapter, we find this amazing principle: “The sower sows the word.  And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” Mark 4:14

Look at the hearts that were called stony ground.  They heard the Word of God and received it with joy.  But that was not enough!  When trouble came, they had no confidence in what they had heard.  They were more moved by what they saw rather than the Word that was in their heart. The circumstances scorched the seed and so, it withered away before it could even take root in the good ground. The Spirit of God acts on the Word in the good ground. The good ground is the person who takes action in agreement with the Word when it is sown and stays in agreement with it.

Fruit is the byproduct of acting on the Word. When you act on the Word the seed will germinate, which causes it to sprout up and begin to develop roots.

Faith can be described, as acting on God’s Word no matter what you see.  Faith acts on the Word of God not in reaction to circumstances.  No matter how you feel, it is faith that brings forth the crop when trouble comes. And trouble will come–but only for a time. You must hold fast and strong onto God’s Word. The person who steadfastly holds onto God’s promises in his heart, even during the hard times, even when there’s a crisis… then this person will obtain the powerful results that answered prayer brings.  But start early. Don’t wait until the last moment to act on God’s Word. Acting on God’s Word will make all the difference between being the stony ground and being the good ground. It’s being the good ground that will bring your spirit the results you desire.

Notice that even in a farmer’s field, good soil is prepared and cultivated before there’s ever a crop harvested.  The farmer continually waters and cares for the seed even when there is nothing visible. The farmer knows the seed is in the ground and he is acting in faith every day in preparation for the seed to produce. Your heart is the good ground and you must act on the Word of God before you’ll see results. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”  2 Corinthians 5:7.

Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”  Mark 11:24. Here’s how this works. I say this not because of “head knowledge” only. No, it’s not just head knowledge that drives me to say this with force in my heart. It’s not even the hundreds of personal experiences in my own life. It’s because God’s Word says so.

Here it is: you believe that you receive when you pray. You believe before you see.  Sounds backwards doesn’t it? But it’s not backwards. This is how the One True God of the universe operates. This principle is a spiritual law that God put in place and then gave us the secret to how things really work.

God’s Word says that the answer already belongs to you when you pray and believe.  According to the teachings of Jesus you shall have what you desire from the Father.

Jesus tells us about the amazing results of the seed when it’s planted in good ground.  “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”  John 15:7.

So this week, remember, it is you and I who make ourselves good ground. And the whole process of answered prayer works best this way: First you hear the Word, then receive the Word, and you believe the Word. Finally, you take action in agreement with the Word in faith. Back to the example of the farmer who cares for the seed in the ground before there are visible results… he daily waters the seed. Without water the seed will dry up and die. Once it germinates it must be watered regularly to stay alive and continue growing. We also water the Word of God by speaking in agreement with it. Thanking God for His Word and the harvest the Word is bringing forth. This is faith at work and faith waters the Word.

Whatever your past has been, as a child of God, He has made you to be the head, not the tail. You can live above every problem, not beneath it. Believe God’s Word is true, then put it into action in your life. Only then will you experience the benefits it offers.
