The Power You Forgot You Needed

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already made the most important decision of your life—choosing to follow Jesus. That’s incredible news. But here’s a serious question for you to think about: are you filled with the Holy Spirit? Not just once. Not just occasionally. But daily. Because if we’re not walking in step with the Spirit, we’re vulnerable. We’re more likely to get pulled into the chaos that’s unfolding all around us.

We’re living in wild times. Really wild. The Bible actually spoke of days like these—days just before Christ returns. Days filled with confusion, deception, and spiritual darkness. The spirit of antichrist isn’t some distant idea. It’s already embedded in culture, influencing how people think, live, and even how some churches operate. Let’s be honest—some pastors today are more fired up about trending social causes than the Gospel. And without the Spirit of God living in us, guiding our steps, how are we supposed to tell the difference between truth and a lie? Between God’s voice and the enemy’s whispers?

John 16:13 alerts us: “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”

The reality is, the remnant of believers who are truly living for Christ is getting smaller. Why? Because discernment is fading. People are losing sight of what’s real. And that’s exactly why being filled with the Holy Spirit isn’t optional—it’s vital.

Jesus Himself said it was better for Him to go so the Spirit could come. Think about that! His Spirit—alive in us, leading us, comforting us, strengthening us, warning us when something isn’t right. This was His plan all along. Sometimes we put all our focus on Jesus as Savior (which is good!), but forget He also gave us His Spirit to help us live this life. To walk through the mess. To stand strong. To know what’s true.

Ephesians 5:18 tells us, “Do not get drunk with wine… but be filled with the Spirit.” That word “filled” isn’t a one-time thing. In the original language, it means continually filled. It’s also a command—not a suggestion—and it’s passive, which means we have to make ourselves available, but God is the One who does the filling. We come thirsty. He pours in. We have to keep coming back for more and He always meets our need, if it’s something He wants for us. And being continually filled with the Holy Spirit is exactly what God and Jesus want for us.

So why does this matter so much?

Because we need help. Real help. And the Holy Spirit is called “The Helper” for a reason. In John 14:26 Jesus says, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”  He teaches. He reminds. He reveals. Without Him, we can’t even fully understand the things of God.  In 1 Corinthians 2:11 Paul says, “no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God”. That’s why we can’t settle for a one-time spiritual experience or a distant memory of when we “felt” close to God. We need His Spirit alive in us today—right now. To sharpen our discernment. To strengthen our resolve. To teach us the truth in every situation. To light our path in a world that’s only getting darker.

So, let me ask you again:

Have you been filled?

And just as important…

Are you being filled?

Let’s not go another day without Him.

In His Spirit,

Dale Black
