Heaven is a topic I regularly receive questions about from people wanting to know more details about what their future holds. My response is always what the Bible says–the ONLY infallible authority on every subject. So let’s consider what Scripture says about this wonderful place made for God’s people. I can testify that it is worth the race and worth the sacrifice of anything this world offers. Your Heavenly Home is worth any cost to experience.

One of the questions I receive is about the size and scope of the City at the center of Heaven, which is also called the New Jerusalem. This heavenly capital, is also referred to in Scripture as the Tabernacle of God, the Holy City, the City of God, the Celestial City, the City Foursquare, and the New Jerusalem. It will literally become heaven on earth when this Celestial City eventually comes to hover over the earthly Jerusalem throughout the thousand year reign of Christ. This is the City to which we look forward. The City that will be the home of those in God’s family. You can find reference to this in Galatians 4:26; Hebrews 11:10; 12:22–24; and 13:14, but it is most fully described in Revelation 21, as the place of our citizenship and the place where we can forever enjoy the fellowship of Jesus, our Lord.

The precise dimensions of the City are measured by an angel and are reported in Revelation 21:15-16. “And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal” (NKJV). That length, width and height are the equivalent of 1500 miles in each direction, or a 1500 mile square. This means there can be many layers of the Capital City. That fact adds to the mystery and wonder of Heaven.

The most important aspect of Heavenly Jerusalem is that God Himself will live there. His presence will be utterly overwhelming. And without doubt, He will be its greatest feature. There will be no temple there for “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” the Bible tells us. The City will have no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it. Scripture does not say there will be no moon or sun, therefore, it is not likely that the sun and moon are done away with. It simply says that there is no use for the light of the sun or moon because the Bible says, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.” Revelation 21:23 NKJV

As you’ve read in my latest book Visiting Heaven, there are many wonderful, mind-boggling things about our heavenly home that encourage us to pay the price to make that our eternal destination. God has provided us with an amazing description of Heaven and the Heavenly Jerusalem throughout Scripture. We are taught by Paul to look forward to our heavenly home and keep the hope of Heaven in our hearts. It is important to remember that we are only sojourners—temporary residents—passing through this world. Heaven is our home and we are citizens of that great land, with joy unspeakable awaiting our arrival!

Jesus said, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

I will be there, will you? If you are unsure, please visit the Book Your Heaven Flight  page on my website at: https: //www.daleblack.org/book-flight-heaven/
